Outback Museum of Australia Competition

2023

On Bidjara land

The extruded gable cross section is an iconic outback form, but also one that delivers a memorable internal museum space and generous shaded verandahs that protect the interior from the harsh environment, and open out to the surrounding landscape. Glazed walls frame the landscape to the south, with the southern orientation and overhanging roof ensuring the glazing is well protected. At the heart of the scheme is the submerged gallery - as one descends they are immersed in the red earth of the local Country and find themselves in a subterranean gallery space that will be utilized for immersive exhibitions. Emerging on the other side, one arrives in the submerged courtyard, contained by red earth walls and floor, and open to the sky.
